Exercise

ExerciseExercise is essential for the successful treatment of clinically severe obesity and is given a prominent role in the multidisciplinary approach to this disease. Exercise is fundamental for good health generally and especially important for weight loss and weight maintenance.

Some of the physiological benefits include:

  • Increased daily energy expenditure
  • Decreased appetite
  • Preservation of muscle mass during weight loss
  • Reduced body fat
  • Increased cardiac efficiency (both at rest and during exercise)
  • Increased flexibility and better motor coordination

Psychological effects are also recognized with exercise and include:

  • Increased energy
  • Less fatigue
  • Improvements in body image and self-esteem

We can arrange for pre-operative exercise instruction to be given by a Physical Therapist. Initially, walking will be emphasized. Swimming is also an excellent form of exercise as are other aquatic activities like water aerobics. As weight comes down and muscles become toned, more exercise becomes available in sports, games, aerobics, etc. Patients find their ability to participate in athletic activities with family and friends greatly enhanced. Physical activity becomes more pleasant.

Daily exercise is recommended and we encourage different types of exercise to reduce the risk of overuse, injuries and boredom. Remember, this is a participatory program. The benefits of exercise cannot be stored. They are quickly lost once regular exercise has ceased. Therefore, it is important to emphasize life-long exercise habits, not short-term fitness fads. Additional information and education will be made available.
