Psychological Support

Psychological SupportPsychological consultation and screening are a fundamental part of a comprehensive bariatric program. The main purpose of the psychological consultation is to identify and address personality and psychological factors that may affect your ability to lose weight and maintain your long-term weight goal. The intent is not to disqualify you for the surgery; rather, it facilitates successful weight loss by ensuring you receive the appropriate level of support and at the times it is most needed.

It is very normal for people who are overweight to feel sad or depressed and embarrassed about their appearance and limitations. Although weight loss surgery is effective and brings about very positive changes in people's lives, it is important to understand it can also bring about unforeseen emotional, behavioral and social factors.

Psychologists at MU Health Care will help to identify signs of possible roadblocks and implement interventions to ensure your success. The psychologist also interfaces with your family, support groups, nutritionists and surgeons to provide coordinated care.
