Combivent inhaler for children
Question
My 4-year-old daughter has been diagnosed with asthma. She is taking Flovent
twice daily and Combivent as needed as the rescue inhaler. Do young children
commonly use Combivent? Everything I read about this medication applies
to patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) or smokers.
Is there a more appropriate treatment for my child?
Answer
According to the "Physician's Desk Reference," the safety and effectiveness
of Combivent Inhalation Aerosol in pediatric patients have not been established.
Several types of bronchodilators are available. Some specifically are not
recommended for children younger than 6, others for children younger than
12, and some have no age recommendations.
We suggest you ask your pediatrician about his or her experience with
the medication. Ask why your doctor chose Combivent and for any information
about this medication's safety record for children.
