University Hospital receives best practice award for care of heart attack patients

University Hospital received the 2007 Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield Successful Practice Award on Sept. 27 at Tan-Tar-A Resort in Osage Beach, Mo.

The award was presented to University Hospital in recognition of the work of numerous departments including cardiology, emergency services and ambulance services that are involved in the treatment of patients with acute myocardial infarction, better known as heart attack.

“The award will be presented to University Hospital’s Acute Coronary Syndromes Team in recognition of our consistent and superior patient outcomes over the past several years,” said Les Hall, M.D., director of University of Missouri Health Care’s Office of Clinical Effectiveness. “The data submitted by the team reflects processes, outcomes and volumes with respect to the care provided to patients experiencing heart attack.”

“An important measure of how well a hospital provides treatment to patients experiencing chest pain is the time it takes staff members to recognize symptoms and manage the care of the patient,” said Richard Webel, M.D., a cardiologist at University Hospital and co-chair of the Acute Coronary Syndromes Team. “For those experiencing acute myocardial infarction, quick treatment can mean the difference between life and death.”

Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield designed the Hospital Quality Improvement Program to reduce variation in practice patterns and outcomes among hospitals. Participants submitted abstracts of successful practices, which were judged by an impartial panel of quality improvement directors.

University Hospital was presented the award at Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield’s annual hospital quality improvement meeting, which allows for an exchange of ideas between attendees. Webel, along with fellow team members Cindy Feutz, A.P.R.N, inpatient cardiology coordinator at University Hospital, and John Yanos, M.D., director of emergency medicine at University Hospital and co-chair of the Acute Coronary Syndromes Team, presented their team’s work at the meeting. This is the first year that the meeting has been held in Missouri.

University Hospital also recently received accreditation as a chest pain center of excellence from the Society of Chest Pain Centers, a nonprofit international professional organization focused on improving care for patients with acute coronary syndromes.
