MU Nurse Specialist co-authors book on pediatric neurosurgery

Cathy Cartwright, R.N.Cathy Cartwright, R.N., pediatric clinical nurse specialist in the Division of  Neurosurgery at University of Missouri Health Care’s Children’s Hospital, has co-written “Nursing Care of the Pediatric Neurosurgery Patient” as a reference for all nurses caring for children with neurosurgical conditions.

“When I started my job as a pediatric clinical nurse specialist in neurosurgery, I looked for a resource that would help me understand the neurosurgical conditions of the children I would be caring for,” said Cartwright. “There was no such book.  I asked other pediatric advanced practice nurses for resources but they did not know of any.”

Cartwright and co-author Donna Wallace, R.N., a pediatric nurse practitioner at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Ariz., thought someone needed to write a book.

“Finally we realized that we were the ones who needed to create a reference book that would be a resource for nurses caring for children with neurosurgical conditions,” said Cartwright.

“Not only will this book be a great resource for nurses, but it will also be useful for other health care professionals such as student nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, respiratory therapists, social workers and child life specialists,” said Cindy Brooks, R.N., manager of pediatric services at Children’s Hospital. “Anyone who cares for these children will find it beneficial in their practice. There has certainly been a need within the pediatric neurosurgery community for this type of information for years.”

The book covers topics such as radiodiagnostic testing, symptoms, treatment options, and patient and family education.

Cartwright graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia Sinclair School of Nursing in 1973 and has been involved in the care of pediatric patients for 33 years. She has been a pediatric clinical nurse specialist at University of Missouri Health Care since 1996.
