Jay Dix race organizers to present donation to Ellis Fischel Cancer Center

Organizers of the Jay Dix Challenge to Cure race will present Charles Caldwell, M.D., medical director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, and Kristi Gafford, executive director of Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, with a check for $20,000 at 7:30 p.m., Wednesday, June 13, at Twin Lakes Recreation Area, 2500 Chapel Hill Road in Columbia.

The race was established five years ago in memory of Jay Dix, M.D., a University of Missouri Health Care pathologist who fought his own battle with cancer. Dix also served as the medical examiner for Boone and Callaway counties and was involved in several medical and research organizations.

Proceeds of the Jay Dix Challenge to Cure race support cancer research and education at Ellis Fischel. The event is organized annually by the Columbia Multisport Club, a local organization developed to encourage participation in road races, cycling races, triathlons and healthy lifestyles.

Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, a part of the University of Missouri Health Care system, is dedicated to providing comprehensive cancer care to all Missourians. More than 100 physician specialists and other trained professionals work together to improve and save the lives of cancer patients. Designated Missouri’s official state cancer center in 2004, Ellis Fischel also offers outpatient treatment and cancer screening services.
