Fast receives faculty award from MU Medical School

Robert Fast, M.D., clinical assistant professor of obstetrics and gynecology at the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, and preceptor for the MU Area Health Education Center at Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, Mo., will receive MU’s Distinguished Community Based Faculty Award Friday, May 18, in the lobby of the maternity unit at Heartland.

The award recognizes community-based rural track preceptors who consistently demonstrate a superior level of commitment and skill for teaching MU rural track medical students. These preceptors serve as outstanding role models for students and regularly teach them about issues particular to rural practice. They provide the highest quality of care for their patients, demonstrate an exemplary level of professionalism, are highly respected by their colleagues and demonstrate active leadership and involvement in their community.

“The MU Rural Track Program is a unique and integral part of the curriculum at the MU School of Medicine,” said Kathleen Quinn, director of the MU Area Health Education Center program. “This program supports the school’s rural mission by helping to train and prepare students for practice in rural Missouri communities. Our community-based preceptors give their time and talent to students who are interested in pursuing rural medicine, and we want to reward them for their efforts.”
Fast has been a preceptor with the rural track program in St. Joseph since October of 2000 and has trained 15 medical students.

MU’s School of Medicine has improved health, education, research and the economy in Missouri for more than 160 years. MU physicians treat patients from every county in the state, and MU is a primary provider of training for all physicians in Missouri. The School of Medicine’s 570 faculty physicians and scientists educate 950 students, residents and fellows. Their research is focused on potentially lifesaving discoveries that address the most prevalent health problems. Patient care and medical innovations at MU also generate new jobs, commercial products and companies in Missouri.
