Gold Ribbon Day promotes fun and awareness
University of Missouri Health Care’s Children’s Hospital will team up with the MU Athletics Department on Sept. 22 to provide young cancer patients and their families with a day of fun-filled Tiger football activities while raising awareness for childhood cancer.
The seventh annual Gold Ribbon Day will begin at 11 a.m., Saturday, Sept. 22, with a tailgate party in the west parking lot of the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veteran’s Administration Hospital for pediatric and adolescent cancer patients from Children’s Hospital. These children and their families will enjoy games, free food and drinks, and a visit from T.J., the Children’s Hospital mascot.
“It’s our goal for this event to let these kids be kids and to honor their courage and determination in winning their battle with cancer,” said Barbara Gruner, M.D., director of Children’s Hospital’s Blood Disorder and Cancer Unit. “We would also like to raise childhood cancer awareness through the Gold Ribbon Day event.”
After the tailgate party, participants will watch the MU Tigers take on the Illinois State University Red Birds in a special reserved section at Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field. Participants will wear gold T-shirts in honor of children who are battling cancer, those who have lost the battle and survivors of the disease.
Children’s Hospital facility is the largest and most comprehensive pediatric health-care center in mid-Missouri. Housed at University Hospital and Clinics and Columbia Regional Hospital, the 115-bed hospital is the only facility in mid-Missouri offering comprehensive, specialized children’s services such as trauma care, neonatal transport, child life therapy and a hospital school.
