University Hospital auxiliary to hold jewelry sale fundraiser
University Hospital’s Service League Auxiliary will hold a jewelry sale fundraiser from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Thursday, April 3, and from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, April 4, in University Hospital’s main lobby. Forum on health disparities
A seminar, “Forum on Social Determinants of Racial and Ethnic Health Disparities,” will be held from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, in the MU Reynolds Alumni Center’s Columns Ballroom D and E. Speakers at the event will include Jeffrey Milyo, PhD, professor of economics at MU, and Adewale Troutman, MD, MPH, associate professor of health management and systems science at the University of Louisville School of Public Health and Information Sciences in Louisville, Ky.
The seminar is sponsored by the Missouri Foundation for Health, the MU Center for Health Policy and the Center for Health Policy at Washington University in St. Louis.

Center to sponsor children’s bereavement conference
The University of Missouri Center for Health Ethics will sponsor a children’s bereavement conference, “Living with Grief: Children and Adolescents,” from noon to 4 p.m., Monday, April 16, at MU’s Reynolds Alumni Center, Columns Ballroom A and B.
The Hospice Foundation of America’s 15th Annual National Bereavement Teleconference will focus on the experience of grieving children and adolescents. It will also look at the ways grief counselors, hospices, parents and schools can help youth as they cope with grief and loss.
Topics at the program will include situations that may cause grief, how youth express grief, strategies to work with grieving youth and the relationship between grieving youth and professional caregivers.
The deadline to register for the conference is Monday, March 31. The cost to attend is $30 for professionals and $20 for students. Continuing education credit is available. Green Meadows clinic to offer healthier living classes
University Physicians-Green Meadows Family Medicine Clinic will offer “Healthier Living: Managing Ongoing Health Conditions,” a class focused on helping people with chronic health conditions live full, healthy lives. The six-week course begins with a class from 1:30 to 3:30 p.m., Thursday, April 17, and will meet weekly in the Green Meadows Family Medicine classroom. The class is free and open to the public. Participants are encouraged to attend all sessions.
Nurse partners and practitioners from the Department of Family and Community Medicine will lead the class. Participants will learn to lessen their frustration with their conditions, increase fitness and self-confidence, decrease fatigue, manage both pain and medications and improve functional abilities to live a healthier and more fulfilling life. Past participants have benefited from the class while living with conditions like arthritis, heart disease, asthma and bronchitis.
“Healthier Living: Managing Ongoing Health Conditions,” is based on the chronic disease self-management program developed by Stanford University. The book, Living a Healthy Life with Chronic Conditions, Third Edition, is used in the class. Participants are encouraged to purchase the book, but some copies will be available on a loan basis.

UMHC’s Got Talent
The University of Missouri Health Care employee talent show will be presented on Monday, April 17, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Lester Bryant Auditorium at University Hospital. Employees, family and friends are invited to this free event. Refreshments will be served from 5:30 to 6 p.m. outside the auditorium.

Music and Healing Lecture and Reception
Music and Healing will be presented by Samuel Wong, MD, Opthalmic Surgeon, Guest Conductor, New York Philharmonic, Royal Philharmonic at 7 p.m., April 24, at Reynolds Alumni Center, reception following. Sponsored by the Carlos Perez Mesa, MD Lectureship in Medical Humanities and MU Center for Health Ethics. Dr. Wong will examine how music can be used to promote health. Lecture is free and open to all.

Art in Health Care Week
University of Missouri Health Care employees are invited to relax and enjoy fine arts during Art in Health Care Week, scheduled Monday, April 28, to Friday, May 2.
The week will feature various events at Columbia Regional Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Quarterdeck and University Hospital. Events will include art exhibits, a book drive, craft classes, live music, storytelling and theater performances.
An exhibit featuring employee artwork will be held during the week. Crafts, paintings, photographs, sculptures and works on paper, such as pencil, ink and charcoal, will be accepted.
