Art in Health Care Week

University of Missouri Health Care employees are invited to relax and enjoy fine arts during Art in Health Care Week, scheduled Monday, April 28, to Friday, May 2.

The week will feature various events at Columbia Regional Hospital, Ellis Fischel Cancer Center, Quarterdeck and University Hospital. Events will include art exhibits, a book drive, craft classes, live music, storytelling and theater performances.

An exhibit featuring employee artwork will be held during the week. Crafts, paintings, photographs, sculptures and works on paper, such as pencil, ink and charcoal, will be accepted. To submit artwork, please contact Art in Health Care at (573) 884-ARTS (2787). The deadline to submit artwork is Friday, April 18.

May 8

Nurse’s Week Awards Ceremony

The Nurse’s Week Awards Ceremony is the culminating event for Nurse’s Week 2008. Awards will be presented for the Excellence in Nursing winners.

The ceremony will be in the Tiger Room at Peachtree Banquet Center on May 8, from 6:30 to 8 p.m.

Clinical Simulation Center Open House

On Monday, May 12, from 10:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., visit the Clinical Simulation Center open house at the Clinical Support and Education Building, 6th Floor, Room CS626. See many vendors with simulation equipment, and try your hand at high-fidelity virtual reality or team training simulation. Dean Nierling Memorial Golf Tournament

The 2008 Dean Nierling Memorial Golf Tournament will be held to raise scholarship funds for emergency medical technicians, paramedics, registered nurses and unit clerks seeking further education in emergency services. The tournament will begin at noon on Monday, May 19, at the A.L. Gustin Golf Course in Columbia. The cost of the four-person scramble is $200 per team, which includes lunch. The registration deadline is Friday, May 9.

Sleep Therapy Clinic

Are you struggling with your CPAP/BiPAP therapy? Do you have difficulty falling or staying asleep? If you answered yes, please plan to attend a sleep therapy clinic on Tuesday, May 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Sinclair Home Care, 115 W. Business Loop 70, located inside Ellis Fischel Cancer Center. Respiratory Therapists will be available to discuss ways to improve your comfort with your sleep therapy equipment, as well as demonstrate the latest innovations in CPAP accessories. Prosthetics and orthotics conference scheduled

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation will hold its 13th annual Prosthetics and Orthotics Conference, titled "Lower-limb Amputation and Prosthetics for Physicians and Allied Health Providers," in late May.

The first part of the two-day conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, May 29, at the Old Alumni Center, located at 1105 Carrie Francke Dr., near the A.L. Gustin Golf Course. A golf tournament at the course will be held after lunch at 12:15 p.m. for conference attendees, health providers and people with amputations. The second part of the conference will be held from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, in Acuff Auditorium, MA217.

Heikki Uustal, MD, director of the prosthetics and orthotics team at the JFK Johnson Rehabilitation Institute in Edison, N.J., will guest speak at the conference. The conference is free for MU faculty, staff and students.

University Hospital auxiliary to hold candy sale fundraiser

The University Hospital Service League Auxiliary will hold a "Candy Gram" fundraiser in recognition of Staff Appreciation Month from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Thursday, May 29, in the hospital's main lobby.

Employees can purchase Hershey's milk or dark chocolate candy bars for $1 and have them delivered by auxiliary members to colleagues at University Hospital, University Physicians Medical Building, the University of Missouri School of Medicine and the MU Sinclair School of Nursing. All proceeds from Service League Auxiliary fundraisers benefit University Hospital patient initiatives.

Band performance to benefit Children's Hospital

Gainor and Friends, a bluegrass band featuring Barry Gainor, MD, an orthopaedic surgeon at University of Missouri Health Care, will perform a benefit concert for Children's Hospital at 8:30 p.m. Friday, May 30, at the Cherry Street Artisan in downtown Columbia.
