Hospital auxiliary donation to benefit heart patients

The heart specialists at University of Missouri Health Care have a new means of transporting heart care to rural Missourians.

University Hospital’s Service League Auxiliary has donated a 2008 Ford Escape Hybrid to the Cardiology Outreach Program.

The environmentally friendly sports utility vehicle will transport a cardiology team comprised of a cardiologist, registered cardiovascular nurse and ultrasonographer, along with their equipment, to clinic sites around the state.

“True to our land-grant mission, we offer cardiac services to underserved areas of Missouri,” said Mike Lambert, manager of cardiology services at University Hospital. “Without these services, patients would have to drive to an urban center for their care.”

The Cardiology Outreach Program started in 1991 with one clinic location. Today, there are outreach clinics in seven cities serving an average of 2,500 patients a year.

University of Missouri Health Care partners with local providers and hospitals to co-manage cardiac patient care. Nearly 250 clinics a year are held in the cities of Fayette, Marshall, Jefferson City, Fulton, Boonville, Macon and Fort Leonard Wood.

Among the cardiology outreach services provided by University specialists are clinics with cardiologists, inpatient cardiac consultations, cardiac event monitoring, echocardiography, exercise stress testing, and cardiac care coordination at local and regional health facilities.

“This donation from the University Hospital Service League Auxiliary is an investment in the future of health care that will benefit all our patients,” said Lambert. “We appreciate all their support.” University Hospital’s Service League Auxiliary was recently named a “2007 Auxiliary of the Year” award winner by the Missouri Hospital Association. In 2006, 20 auxiliary members donated more than 6,600 hours of service and $79,000 in funds and equipment to the hospital and its related programs.

Auxiliary members perform numerous in-service programs for University Hospital and assist with hospital-sponsored activities. The hospital auxiliary also funds scholarships for students pursuing health care careers. In 2006, the auxiliary provided four $2,500 scholarships for nursing students at the University of Missouri-Columbia.

“The Service League Auxiliary is proud to support and improve the patient care experience at University Hospital,” said Kay Steward, guest relations manager at University Hospital. “Through our donation to the cardiology outreach program, we saw an opportunity to assist and improve a program making a real difference in the communities of rural Missouri.”
