UMHC Palliative Care Committee promotes National Healthcare Decision Day locally

University of Missouri Health Care’s Palliative Care Committee will sponsor an information booth in the lobby of University Hospital from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday, April 15.

April 16 is National Healthcare Decisions Day. The goal of this nationwide initiative is to ensure that all adults with decision-making capacity in America have both the information and opportunity to communicate and document their future health care decisions.

“The Patient Self Determination Act of 1990 affirmed the right of every citizen to set forth in writing an advance directive of his or her future health care wishes,” said Mary Cunningham, APRN, clinical nurse specialist with University of Missouri Health Care’s Palliative Care Program. “Yet, various estimates suggest that fewer than 25 percent of Americans have an advance directive.”

Staff will be available at the event to answer questions about advance directives, durable powers of attorney for health care and health care choice directives. Print and Web site resources will also be available.

For more information, please contact Mary Cunningham at (573) 884-7103.
