UMHC celebrates Medical Laboratory Professionals Week
University of Missouri Health Care will celebrate National Medical Laboratories Professional Week from April 20 to April 26.
The clinical laboratory professional is a key member of the health care team. Laboratory professionals use their skills to obtain important information concerning the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of disease.
“Nurses, physicians and other medical workers depend on laboratory professionals to perform tests on body fluids, interpret the results and help provide a complete picture of the patient’s health,” said Tobias Rojas, clinical laboratory supervisor at Columbia Regional Hospital. “Using modern biomedical equipment and complicated analysis, laboratory professionals can detect the presence of cancer, identify infectious viruses and bacteria, and measure glucose, cholesterol or drug levels in blood.”
“Laboratory professionals work in hospitals, physician offices or private clinical laboratories where they perform laboratory tests and monitor the quality of their results,” said Bruce Benard, manager of laboratory services at University Hospital. “Others are employed by university or industrial research laboratories to seek solutions for medicine’s many unanswered questions. Laboratory professionals are also found outside their traditional environment where they participate in community health activities, conduct environmental testing or serve in the Peace Corps.”
University of Missouri Health Care employs approximately 220 laboratory professionals. These include medical technologists, medical laboratory technicians, hospital laboratory technicians, cytotechnologists, histotechnologists, pathologists, phlebotomists, clerical staff and information services staff.
