Muzaffar named editor of international craniofacial publication
Arshad Muzaffar, MD, director of craniofacial and pediatric plastic surgery at University of Missouri Health Care, was recently named editor-in-chief of The Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Journal.
The journal is a bi-monthly international publication of the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association that highlights diagnosis and treatment of craniofacial anomalies. The journal also explores and reports on the study and treatment of new and proven surgical procedures, and keeps specialists in touch with the latest research in related laboratory sciences.
At UMHC, Muzaffar oversees a comprehensive program dedicated to providing diagnosis and treatment of several complicated craniofacial anomalies.
"Our program not only includes the craniofacial surgeon but other sub-specialists as well," said Muzaffar. "Our comprehensive team is able to offer different treatment options for those with craniofacial disfigurement, and I feel that we are the premier provider here in mid-Missouri."
According to the American Academy of Family Physicians, one out of every 600 newborn babies is affected by a cleft lip or cleft palate, making this birth defect the fourth most common in the United States. Abnormal growth patterns of the face or skull that involve soft tissue and bone can produce other craniofacial irregularities. Craniofacial disfigurement may also be the result of disease or trauma.
