Provider Credentials: What is a PCP? PCP stands for primary care provider. A PCP is a physician or nurse practitioner who will attend to your basic health care needs and get to know you and your medical history. What is a Nurse Practitioner? A family nurse practitioner (FNP) is an advanced practice nurse who has advanced education and clinical practice beyond an undergraduate nursing degree. At Student Health, the FNP and physicians work together as a team. The FNPs can effectively care for patients who require health maintenance, health education or who have minor illnesses, allowing the physicians more time to see more seriously ill or medically complicated patients. What is a Team? PCPs work together in teams consisting of at least one Student Health Center physician and two nurse practitioners, as well as nursing and clerical support staff. If your PCP is unavailable, you may have to see a team member who will communicate with your PCP to help maintain the continuity of your care.
