About the Medical Staff


Medical Staff Staff Categories

Active Category
Appointees to this category must hold regular or full-time non-regular faculty appointments in the University of Missouri-Columbia School of Medicine, have served on the University Hospitals and Clinics medical staff for one (1) year, be involved in fifty (50) patient contacts (i.e., a patient contact is defined as an inpatient admission, consultation or diagnostic evaluation, outpatient visit) at the University Hospitals and Clinics per two-year (2) period. The patient contact requirement may be waived for practitioners in the active category with at least twenty (20) years of service in the active category or for those physicians who document their efforts to support the hospital's patient care mission to the satisfaction of the Executive Committee and Governing Authority.  In the event that an appointee to the active category does not meet the qualifications for reappointment to the active category, and if the appointee is otherwise abiding by all Bylaws, Rules, Regulations, and policies of the staff, the appointee may be appointed to the affiliate category. Vote on all matters presented by the medical staff and by the appropriate department and committee of which he or she is a member.
 Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must: Contribute to the organizational and administrative affairs of the medical staff.  Actively participate in recognized functions of the staff appointment including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including monitoring of new appointees during the provisional period and in discharging other staff functions as may be required.  Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the medical staff.

Affiliate Category
The affiliate category is reserved for practitioners who do not meet the eligibility requirements for the active category or choose not to pursue active status.
 Responsibilities - Appointees to this category must:  Contribute to the organizational and administrative affairs of the medical staff.  Actively participate in recognized functions of the staff appointment including quality/performance improvement, risk management and monitoring activities, including monitoring of new appointees during the provisional period and in discharging other staff functions as may be required.  Fulfill any meeting attendance requirements as established by the medical staff.

Honorary Category
The honorary category is restricted to those individuals recommended by the Executive Committee and approved by the Governing Authority.  Appointment to this category is entirely discretionary and may be rescinded at any time.  Reappointment to this category is not necessary, as appointees are not eligible for clinical privileges.  They may attend medical staff department meetings, continuing medical education activities, and may be appointed to committees.  They shall not hold office or be eligible to vote.
