Falls Prevention

Every year, one in three adults ages 65+ takes a fall. In Missouri, falls are the leading cause of injury death among this age group. Ninety-five percent of hip fractures are caused by falls in Missouri and only half of those who sustain such injuries are able to return home or live independently following a fall.

The Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD, Trauma Center Injury Prevention and Outreach team takes falls seriously and offers a variety of educational tools, presentations and screening clinics to help inform mid-Missourians about ways to prevent these injuries.

Save Your Hips Free Health Screening Clinics
A multidisciplinary team of health professionals volunteer their time each month to assess older adults in areas that often cause falls. These free clinics are offered in community senior centers and independent living facilities. Clinics include vision and hearing screenings, balance and gait checks, in-home solutions to avoid potential hazards, bone density scans to detect bone loss, medication evaluation and nutrition information. For more information or for upcoming clinic dates and locations, contact the Injury Prevention Outreach coordinator at (573) 884-6381.

Matter of Balance
Matter of Balance courses are offered to older adults to prevent traumatic falls. These courses vary from four to eight weeks in length and are offered throughout the state of Missouri in conjunction with University of Missouri Extension. They cover in-depth evidence-based practices on how older adults can overcome the fear of falling. Master trainers teach the courses and these trainers also train "coaches," who provide instruction to older adults in their respective communities. For more information, contact the Injury Prevention Outreach coordinator at (573) 884-6381.

Community Presentations
Injury Prevention Outreach staff present tips on how to prevent falls to the community throughout mid-Missouri
