Firearms, and the potential dangers involved with firearms, are often overlooked as an important topic for safety and education. More than 150 near-fatal gunshot victims were seen by our trauma surgeons between 2008 and 2010. Sadly, this number doesn't refect those who were not fortunate enough to make it to the Trauma Center.
Firearms pose real, life-threatening dangers and we believe community safety education is important. Free, public courses have been offered since November 2010. Todd Burke, a 30-year emergency responder and an accredited firearms instructor, has graciously offered his expertise partnering with the Frank L. Mitchell Jr., MD, Trauma Center staff. These firearms' courses have been extremely popular and well attended. For more information or to plan an event on-site, please contact the Injury Prevention Outreach coordinator at (573) 884-6381.
