Falls and injuries

This measure tracks patient falls and injuries that occur while a person is in the hospital. Although falls and injuries can occur anywhere, including the home or in the hospital, hospital staff follow careful precautions to prevent falls. For example, they check patients' balance and coordination, review their medications for side effects such as dizziness, and assist patients who need help moving around. Average or lower rates of falls and injuries may be a sign of that the hospital's health care professionals are carefully following practices to prevent their occurrence.
