Those seeking care should choose appropriate option
MU Health Care is among the many health systems nationwide experiencing high emergency department and inpatient volumes due to ongoing flu and respiratory illnesses and is urging patients to choose the most appropriate care setting for their symptoms.
“We want patients to get timely care while ensuring our emergency rooms are available for those with life-threatening conditions,” said Dr. Laura Morris, chief medical officer, Ambulatory Care at MU Health Care. “Choosing the right level of care helps everyone receive care faster.”
MU Health Care offers multiple same-day care options:
- Quick Care (ages 2 and older) for common illnesses such as colds, flu, sore throats, ear infections and rashes. Click here to get in line for an appointment at our Columbia locations.
- Urgent Care for all ages when symptoms are more severe or require X-rays or breathing treatments.
- On-Demand Telehealth for patients 2 months and older, available daily from 8 a.m. to 7:30 p.m. Click here to sign up.
- Emergency Rooms for life-threatening symptoms such as chest pain, severe breathing trouble, uncontrolled bleeding, head injuries or sudden confusion.
Flu symptoms often start suddenly with fever, body aches and fatigue. Patients should seek care for trouble with breathing, dehydration, symptoms that worsen or fevers lasting more than five days. Children, older adults and people with chronic conditions should seek care sooner.
