Detlev Erdmann, MD, PhD, MHSc, was born and raised in Frankfurt, Germany. After graduating from medical school in Munich, Germany, he completed his general surgery, plastic surgery and hand surgery training at University of Heidelberg in Germany. Dr. Erdmann joined the Duke University plastic surgery faculty in 2003 before coming to   the University of Missouri as a professor and chief of the Division of Plastic Surgery in July 2022.

Dr. Erdmann’s clinical interests include — but are not limited to — plastic surgery after weight loss (body contouring); reconstructive surgery of the extremities, chest and other areas, including microsurgery; breast surgery, including male breast surgery; hand surgery; and many others.

He has published about 200 articles in scientific journals, is a member of various plastic surgery societies and has served as board examiner. Dr. Erdmann was part of a team of surgeons that performed the first abdominal wall transplantation in North Carolina in 2018. Dr. Erdmann enjoys spending time with his family, the outdoors and various sports.
