Matthew T. Robinson, MD, medical director of the Emergency Department at MU Health Care, has been named chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine at the MU School of Medicine, effective Sept. 1, 2017.

Dr. Robinson, an associate professor of clinical emergency medicine in the MU School of Medicine, has served as the interim chair of the Department of Emergency Medicine since Dec. 12, 2015.

“Dr. Robinson has a proven history of leadership within our Department of Emergency Medicine,” said Patrick Delafontaine, MD, Hugh E. and Sarah D. Stephenson Dean of the University of Missouri School of Medicine “He established the Administrative Fellowship of Emergency Medicine program, oversaw the department’s first graduating class of the new emergency medicine residency program, and arranged for our emergency department to host the regional meeting for the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine here this fall. His experience as a leader, educator and clinician makes him ideally suited to foster a continued environment of patient-centered care for the MU School of Medicine.”

Dr. Robinson has served as vice chair of clinical operations of MU Health Care’s Emergency Department since 2014. A decorated veteran, Dr. Robinson served as officer-in-charge of medical shock/trauma/surgical units in Iraq from 2003-2004. He is a former attending physician in emergency medicine at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, and he was actively involved filling multiple roles in the emergency medicine residency training program there.

His past experience in emergency medicine also includes medical staff positions at several health systems including the University of Southern California/Los Angeles County Hospital, Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph and Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans’ Hospital in Columbia.

A fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians and the American Academy of Emergency Medicine, Dr. Robinson has demonstrated his leadership ability and commitment to excellent clinical care, medical education and research since he came to MU in 2006.

Dr. Robinson is an alumnus of the MU School of Medicine who received his medical degree in 1998. Previously, he received a bachelor’s degree in biochemistry from Missouri State University in Springfield. He completed an internship in internal medicine at the National Naval Medical Center-Bethesda and a residency in emergency medicine at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, Virginia, in 2003. While there, he served as academic chief resident in emergency medicine from 2002-2003.

He has served as a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Staff of MU Health Care since 2014. As medical director of MU Health Care’s Emergency Department, he has led the E.D.’s expansion and remodeling project. He also began a partnership in which emergency medicine physicians from MU Health Care provide emergency care at Moberly Regional Medical Center.
