Story Summary
Former college soccer player Madeleine cherished the camaraderie of practices and games but endured repeated injuries, ultimately ending her career with a chronic stress fracture in her right tibia.
The painful, recurring injury required surgery during Thanksgiving break in 2022, when she planned to recover at home while studying for her nursing licensure exam.
Instead, a complication from a nerve block left her without sensation for days and resulted in severe tissue damage.
Her surgeon quickly recognized the seriousness of the situation and referred her to MU Health Care’s Limb Preservation Program, a multidisciplinary team focused on preventing amputation and preserving function.
