Am I a Candidate for DBS Treatment?
DBS is most often used when medications cannot provide steady relief for certain movement disorders. It may help reduce tremors, stiffness, motor fluctuations and medication side effects.
You may be a candidate for deep brain stimulation if you have:
- Dystonia that doesn’t respond well to medication
- Essential tremor that interferes with daily activities
- Parkinson’s disease with dyskinesias, motor fluctuations or side effects from medications
We’ll start with a neurological evaluation to assess your motor symptoms, mental health and cognitive status. If DBS may be a good fit, you’ll meet with the neurosurgical team to discuss options and schedule the procedure.
Not everyone is a candidate for deep brain stimulation. For example, if you primarily experience non-motor symptoms, a different treatment may be better suited for your condition. Our team will provide recommendations for your exact needs to help you make an informed decision.
