Only 11 health systems nationwide have received this designation from DNV

MU Health Care has received the Orthopedic and Spine Center of Excellence Designation from global independent certification provider DNV.

The designation affirms MU Health Care’s excellence in diagnostic services, surgical services and therapies related to orthopaedics and spine care. This designation requires advanced certification in at least three programs. MU Health Care’s advanced certifications include advanced spine surgery, hip and knee replacement and shoulder surgery.

“This designation shows a commitment to excellence and demonstrates that we have the ability to provide consistent, high quality orthopaedic and spine care,” said James P. Stannard, MD, medical director of the Missouri Orthopaedic Institute and the Hansjörg Wyss Distinguished Chair in Orthopaedic Surgery at the MU School of Medicine. “Achieving this designation validates that we have the equipment, personnel and training to perform at the highest level in the country to ensure the health and safety of our patients.”

The DNV advanced orthopaedic and spine requirements are informed by the guidelines and recommendations of organizations such as the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons the American Association of Hip and Knee Surgeons, the ERAS® Society, the North American Spine Society, the American Society of Anesthesiologists and relevant requirements of the CMS Conditions of Participation for Hospitals.

MU Health Care is one of only 11 health systems nationwide to have received this designation and is the only recipient in Missouri.
