Story Summary
In 2016, before he turned 45, Toby Orcutt was driving home from California when his body suddenly stopped cooperating—his numb hip flexors could no longer move his foot between the gas and brake.
Once a Marine helicopter crew chief who prided himself on near-perfect fitness-test scores, Toby had spent years pushing through muscle weakness that doctors could not explain.
Over the next two decades, his strength steadily disappeared, forcing him to abandon construction work, give up exercise and adapt again and again as each new muscle stopped working.
Now unable to walk and struggling to breathe, Toby and his wife, Chris, moved to southwest Missouri, where a referral through the VA and Paralyzed Veterans of America finally brought him to MU Health Care’s neurology clinic.
