Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment in which doctors place partner or donor sperm directly into your uterus while you are ovulating to facilitate egg fertilization.

IUI is a painless outpatient procedure that does not require anesthesia. It only takes a few minutes to perform. Your doctor will insert a speculum into your vagina and then use a small catheter to introduce sperm into your uterus.

In the weeks leading up to your IUI procedure, your doctor might prescribe oral medications to regulate your menstrual cycle and induce ovulation. You might also be given an injection 24 to 48 hours before the procedure to trigger ovulation. Meanwhile, our andrology team will “wash” the semen sample to ensure only the freshest, most active sperm are used during the procedure.

Approximately two weeks after the procedure, we will perform a pregnancy test in our office to determine whether this IUI cycle was successful. Sometimes, it can take several cycles for conception to occur.
