What to Expect with Speech Therapy
You’ll need a physician referral to begin speech therapy at MU Health Care. If you’ve had therapy in the past, we can coordinate with your doctor if symptoms return and you want to come back.
Speech therapy starts with a detailed evaluation. Your care team gets to know your symptoms, goals and what matters most to you.
Here’s what to plan for:
- Before therapy begins: We review your medical history, complete formal assessments and ask questions about how your condition affects daily life. Together, we create a personalized plan with specific goals and a timeline, which is shared with your referring provider.
- During therapy: Most sessions last 45 to 60 minutes and take place once or twice a week., depending on your needs Your therapist adjusts each session based on how you’re doing and may change your environment to better replicate real-life situations.
- As therapy continues: We reassess your goals monthly, or sooner if you’re progressing quickly. You’ll get ongoing feedback, and we may update your therapy plan along the way.
- If you need FEES testing: We use a small scope to check how your throat works while you eat and drink. You may be able to bring your own foods, and we use a monitor that allows you to see what’s happening as you swallow.
