If you or your child struggles with speech, language or swallowing, we offer expert care, including intensive programs and advanced equipment.

Speech therapy can help restore the skills needed to eat, speak and think, especially after illness, surgery or injury.

At MU Health Care’s Mizzou Therapy Services, we offer adult and pediatric speech therapy for a wide range of conditions. That includes stroke, brain injury or cancer, as well as neurologic or degenerative diseases.

Our licensed speech-language pathologists go beyond articulation. We help people eat safely, speak clearly, think more confidently and meet functional goals, like returning to work, giving a presentation or making a phone call.

Speech Therapy at MU Health Care

Our speech-language pathologists care for both adults and children, with personalized therapy plans for your condition, age and goals.

We treat a wide range of concerns, including:

  • Cognitive-linguistic challenges: Trouble with attention, memory, problem-solving, safety awareness, decision making and other executive function skills like planning or organizing.
  • Fluency disorders: Difficulty speaking smoothly, including stuttering or disruptions in speech rhythm and flow.
  • Language impairments: Trouble finding words, forming sentences, reading, writing or expressing thoughts.
  • Social communication concerns: Difficulty interpreting facial expressions, tone or social cues, as well as trouble knowing what to say or how to conduct yourself during conversation.
  • Speech disorders: Slurred or unclear speech (dysarthria), loss of language (aphasia), trouble naming things (anomia), problems producing sounds (articulation) or abnormal speech patterns.
  • Swallowing disorders: Coughing, choking, food sticking, trouble chewing or moving food and other signs of dysphagia.
  • Voice issues: Hoarseness, pitch changes, vocal strain or difficulty coordinating breathing with speaking.

Our Team

Your care begins with a referral — often from a primary care provider, neurologist, oncologist or ENT specialist. From there, we coordinate with your care team, which may include:

We also offer support through Ellis Fischel Cancer Center and the Ambulatory Infusion Unit.

Our Approach to Speech Therapy

At MU Health Care, our speech-language pathologists work closely with you to build a care plan that supports your goals — whether you’re recovering from an illness, living with a neurologic condition or managing complex cancer care.

As part of an academic health system, we offer diagnostic tools and specialized programs not widely available elsewhere in mid-Missouri. We focus on helping you regain independence, safety and confidence.

Our Speech Therapy Services

Your speech therapy plan is personalized to your condition, goals and lifestyle. Our services include advanced assessments and specialty programs for both adults and children.

Here’s what we offer:

  • Augmentative and alternative communication (AAC): Provides evaluations and treatment for severe expressive communication disorders by providing alternative ways to communicate, including technology-assisted devices.
  • Lee Silverman Voice Treatment (LSVT) LOUD: Provides structured, therapist-guided vocal exercises for adults with Parkinson’s disease and children who may benefit from LSVT LOUD for KIDS.
  • Aural rehabilitation: Focused adults and children with hearing impairment who have received hearing aids and cochlear implants.
  • The McNeill Dysphagia Therapy Program: An intensive, research-based approach to swallowing therapy that supports patients with severe swallowing difficulties (dysphagia).
  • Myofascial release: A stretching technique used to improve muscle elasticity, strength and range of motion for better swallowing, speech and voice function.
  • Speaking valve trials: Involves testing a one-way speaking valve, often a Passy-Muir Valve (PMV), to help you speak after a tracheostomy. The valve lets air in through the tracheostomy but redirects it through the vocal cords on exhalation.
  • VitalStim: A treatment that uses electrical stimulation to improve swallowing. Electrodes are placed on weak muscles to help retrain the nerves and improve function.

Specialty Clinics for Pediatric Patients

Our Children’s Therapy Center and pediatric specialty clinics support children of all ages with developmental and acquired conditions.

Our services include:

  • Aerodigestive Program: Dedicated to assessment and follow-up of swallowing difficulty, including Modified Barium Swallow studies.
  • Motility Program: Helps children who struggle with digesting food, working to improve comfort and nutrition.
  • Neonatal Intensive Care: Our dual-certified speech-language pathologist and lactation consultant work with families and NICU staff to support early feeding development.
  • Thompson Center for Autism and Neurodevelopment Disorders: Our therapists support children receiving care at the Thompson Center for Autism or other neurodevelopmental conditions.
  • Tiger Intensive Program: Combines speech therapy with physical and occupational therapy to provide intensive, coordinated care for complex needs.

Advanced Swallowing Therapy and Evaluations

If you have trouble swallowing — especially after cancer treatment — our specialists use advanced tools and therapies to help you eat and drink safely. We offer:

  • Clinical swallow evaluations.
  • Fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES): A flexible camera shows how your throat functions while you swallow.
  • Modified barium swallow studies (MBS): These tests, recorded on our TIMS unit, detect aspiration risk in real time.
  • Myofascial release: Supports healthy muscle movement in your head, neck and jaw.
  • Viewing monitors: You and your care team can see what’s happening as the study happens.
  • Swallow preservation exercises: Help maintain swallowing ability during cancer treatment.
  • Trismus therapy: Helps relieve tight jaw muscles after radiation.

We also provide advanced speech-language therapy for people affected by head and neck cancer through every stage of treatment and recovery.

Speech Therapy for Total Laryngectomy Patients

Our speech therapy team provides specialized care for patients undergoing advanced surgeries, including total laryngectomy.

Our services include:

  • Assessing and placing tracheoesophageal voice prostheses (TEP), a device that helps produce voice using the esophagus.
  • Preoperative counseling to help you prepare for changes in speech and swallowing.
  • Training in the use of an artificial larynx or electrolarynx for voice production.
