If you have these signs, get emergency care or urgent care.

Our Approach to Wound Care

Chronic and complex wound care at MU Health Care involves more than just treating your burn, sore or infection. We’ll assemble the right team of experts to help heal your wound and reduce your risk of complications.

Your care team may include:

What to Expect During Your First Visit

For your first visit, you’ll meet with a nurse practitioner for about one hour. We will assess any underlying conditions that could affect your body’s ability to heal wounds. Then our team of specialists will provide personalized care to help you heal based on:

  • Your age and other medical conditions
  • The location, area and depth of your wound
  • Whether you have an infection
  • Your lifestyle, goals and preferences

Unlike other centers, our team may be able to see you more quickly and frequently. For example, you may be able to see us every week or two weeks for treatment. With this approach, we can provide more consistent care and identify any issues at early stages.

How We Treat Chronic and Complex Wounds

We offer a full range of advanced diagnostic tools and treatments to help wounds heal. Because we’re an academic health system, we have leading-edge options that are not widely available at other centers in mid-Missouri.

Expert Diagnostic Testing

Understanding the underlying causes of chronic wounds is important to helping them heal.

Some of the tests we may order include:

  • Venous and arterial ultrasounds: Detect blood vessel issues that can cause chronic leg wounds.
  • X-rays, computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI): Identify bone infections that prevent a wound from healing.

Nonsurgical Wound Treatments

Our team can help heal wounds with nonsurgical therapies such as:

  • Skin substitutes: Products made from living or synthetic materials to cover wounds.
  • Wound vacuums: Devices that use suction to remove fluid and germs from a wound to reduce healing time.
  • Compression wraps: Bandages that apply pressure to reduce swelling (edema).
  • Antibiotics: Help kill bacteria infecting a wound.
  • Hyperbaric oxygen therapy: Involves a special chamber, located in our Columbia clinic, that uses pure oxygen to heal wounds.

Surgery to Treat Wounds

For some wounds, procedures performed by a general surgeon or plastic surgeon may be the best option.

Our surgeons may recommend:

  • Debridement: Involves removing any dead or infected tissue to help a wound heal.
  • Skin grafts: Cover a wound using extra skin from another body part.
  • “Flap” surgery and free tissue transfers: Move skin and tissue with its own blood supply to cover wounds.
