At MU Health Care, your child receives expert care for hypospadias — with experienced surgeons and a team that supports your family every step of the way.
Hypospadias is a condition present at birth where the opening of the urethra is not located at the tip of the penis. This can affect urination and, later in life, sexual function. Hypospadias is common and treatable with surgery — often during infancy.
At MU Health Care, our pediatric urologist treats a high volume of hypospadias cases and is an expert in surgical repair. We can help you understand your options and provide detailed guidance on surgery, recovery and long-term outcomes.
Pediatric Hypospadias Symptoms
Hypospadias is usually diagnosed shortly after birth during a routine physical exam.
Signs of hypospadias may include:
- The urethral opening appears on the underside of the penis, instead of on the tip
- A downward curve in the penis (called chordee)
- An abnormal urine stream
- A hooded appearance to the foreskin
In most cases, symptoms do not cause pain.
When to Seek Care
If your child was diagnosed at birth or has visible symptoms later in infancy, your child’s pediatrician may refer you directly to a pediatric urologist. An evaluation can help determine whether surgery is needed.
Pediatric Hypospadias Diagnosis at MU Health Care
If your child has this condition, they will typically be diagnosed as a newborn. However, if hypospadias is more subtle, it may be noticed later on.
Our team may use the following methods to diagnose hypospadias:
- A physical exam by a pediatric urologist
- Review of family history or any prior surgeries, if applicable
We help you understand the specifics of your child’s condition and whether surgery is appropriate.
