Our Approach to Pediatric Wound Care
When you bring your child to MU Health Care, you benefit from our team of kid-focused wound care specialists including:
- Pediatric plastic surgeons: Have advanced training in wound repair as well as craniofacial surgery, hand surgery and jaw surgery.
- Pediatric plastic surgery nurses: Help educate and support your family.
- Wound care nurses: Specialize in treating wounds in kids and adults.
- Child life specialists: Reduce stress during your child’s treatment and hospital stays.
If your child needs reconstructive surgery for a complex wound, your family will first meet with a pediatric plastic surgeon and pediatric plastic surgery nurse. We’ll work with you to personalize treatment based on factors such as:
- Your child’s age and overall health
- The location, area and depth of the wound
- Whether any muscles, tendons or other issues are exposed in the wound
- Whether the wound is infected
If your child needs ongoing care for their wound, we’ll provide a long-term plan for your family. We can also coordinate with other specialists at MU Health Care when needed. For example, if your child has a wound from a tumor, we can collaborate with our pediatric cancer care team.
Why Choose MU Health Care for Pediatric Wound Care
- Expertise in microsurgery: For complex wounds, we can transfer tissue with its own nerves and blood supply from another body part. Called microsurgery, this technique can help preserve sensation in the area after surgery. We can even re-attach tissue with bone and small joints to help maintain function.
- Access to pediatric hyperbaric oxygen therapy: This treatment increases blood oxygen levels to help heal complex wounds more efficiently. MU Health Care is one of the only centers in mid-Missouri offering this treatment for children.
- Support for complex conditions present at birth: We routinely treat kids with wounds related to conditions affecting the development of their faces, hands and feet. We can provide innovative treatments to repair these issues and help them heal after surgery.
