If shoulder pain or limited movement is negatively affecting your life, MU Health Care’s expert surgeons offer advanced technology and personalized recovery support for shoulder replacement surgery.

Shoulder pain or stiffness from arthritis, rotator cuff damage or an injury can make everyday activities a challenge.

When physical therapy, injections or other nonsurgical treatments no longer provide relief, shoulder replacement surgery may help reduce pain and improve the way your shoulder moves.

At MU Health Care, our orthopaedic surgeons specialize in shoulder replacement procedures, including complex cases.

If surgery is the right option for you, we use leading-edge 3D technology to plan your surgery and create a personalized care plan that supports your recovery from day one.

Shoulder Replacement Surgery at MU Health Care

Shoulder pain and limited mobility look different for everyone, but if your daily life is affected, it’s time to seek treatment.

We start with a full evaluation, including a medical history review and physical exam, to understand your goals, symptoms and overall health. We’ll then explore the best approach for you and walk you through next steps.

Am I a Candidate for Shoulder Replacement Surgery?

Shoulder replacement isn’t always necessary but may be the most effective way to relieve pain and improve function in some cases. You may be a candidate for shoulder replacement if:

  • Imaging shows joint damage, arthritis or a torn rotator cuff.
  • Other treatments haven’t improved your symptoms.
  • Pain is interfering with your everyday life.
  • You’ve lost strength or range of motion in your shoulder.

Our Approach to Shoulder Replacement Surgery

If nonsurgical treatments haven’t brought enough relief to your symptoms, shoulder replacement surgery may help.

If surgery is the right choice, we use 3D imaging to precisely plan your procedure. In complex cases, we may design a custom 3D-printed implant for your shoulder.

Throughout your recovery, you’ll work with a team of specialists, including surgeons, rehab experts and pain management providers.

Your Surgical Evaluation

Before surgery, we will:

  • Assess joint damage and your anatomy using imaging such as X-rays, CT scan or MRI.
  • Check your shoulder’s motion and strength with a physical exam.
  • Review your medical history and any other health conditions.
  • Walk you through next steps so you feel informed and prepared.

What to Expect on Surgery Day

Shoulder replacement is typically an outpatient procedure.

During surgery:

  • Anesthesia is provided, and you may also receive a nerve block for added pain control.
  • An incision is made to access the joint.
  • Damaged parts of the shoulder are removed and replaced with artificial components.

Recovery After Shoulder Replacement Surgery

Recovery starts right away — often with physical therapy on the same day as surgery.

Here’s what to expect in the days and weeks after shoulder replacement surgery:

  • Education and support: You’ll receive printed guides and access to our “shoulder joint camp” video to help with daily tasks like getting dressed and sleeping.
  • Follow-up visits: We’ll monitor your healing and adjust your care plan if needed.
  • Rehabilitation: Ongoing physical therapy helps restore your strength, flexibility and function. We also design your rehab plan with physical therapists to ensure you can recover easily at home after your stay.
  • Sling use: You may wear a sling for a few weeks after surgery.
