When to Seek Help for Foot and Ankle Pain

If you have pain in your ankle, toe, heel or ball of your foot, it’s best not to ignore it. Many types of foot and ankle pain can get worse over time. Schedule an appointment if you have:

  • Numbness in your foot
  • Pain that limits your ability to walk
  • Pain that is severe or lasts longer than a few weeks
  • Redness or swelling, which could be signs of infection
  • Wounds on your foot that won’t heal

You have several options for getting help for sore feet and ankles, including talking to your primary care provider. Or, you can reach out directly to one of our podiatrists or orthopaedic specialists who specialize in treating foot and ankle pain. Our team will examine your foot, order tests and recommend treatments based on the cause of your pain.

How We Diagnose Foot and Ankle Pain at MU Health Care

Because foot and ankle pain can have so many different causes, getting a precise diagnosis is the first step. Our team has the expertise and imaging technology to help uncover the cause of your pain.

At your first visit, we’ll review your medical history and examine your foot and ankle. We may also order X-rays of your foot, ankle or both. Other tests we may order to understand what’s causing your pain include:

  • Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), which can help identify foot structures in more detail than an X-ray.
  • Computed tomography (CT), which helps doctors see your anatomy and may help them plan a future surgery, if needed.
  • Ultrasound, which can examine ligaments, tendons and other soft tissue to identify tendon tears and other issues.

How We Treat Foot and Ankle Pain at MU Health Care

As an academic health system, MU Health Care can provide the latest orthopaedic treatments. Our surgeons routinely perform innovative procedures, such as ankle replacements, that aren’t available at many other hospitals. We use the latest scientific recommendations and research to guide your care and help you heal.

If you need inpatient or outpatient surgery, we can perform your procedure at either of our Missouri Orthpaedic Institute locations. Our physical therapists (PTs) can also personalize your rehabilitation to help relieve pain, build strength and improve mobility.

Nonsurgical Treatments for Foot and Ankle Pain

Many types of foot and ankle pain can be improved without surgery. Nonsurgical treatments we offer include:

  • Medications to reduce pain and inflammation or treat other conditions contributing to discomfort.
  • Injections, which often include a steroid to reduce pain and inflammation.
  • Orthotics (shoe inserts), splints and braces to improve your foot and ankle alignment.
  • Physical therapy to help reduce pain, increase strength and improve range of motion.
  • Wound care for diabetic foot wounds.

Surgery for Foot and Ankle Pain

When you have daily foot and ankle pain even after trying nonsurgical treatments, surgery may help. Many surgeries for foot and ankle pain can be performed as outpatient (same day) procedures using minimally invasive techniques. Because these surgeries use smaller incisions, you may have fewer complications and a faster recovery.

Some of the advanced surgical treatments we offer include:

  • Achilles and peroneal tendon repairs, which either involve repairing or removing and replacing the torn tendon.
  • Ankle replacements, which allow more mobility than ankle fusions (the traditional treatment for ankle arthritis).
  • Arthroscopic surgery, a minimally invasive surgical procedure that uses a small camera which allows surgeons to examine and treat joint conditions.
  • Bunion surgery, such as Lapiplasty® and other advanced surgical techniques to not only remove bunions, but to also make them less likely to return.
  • Foot fracture surgery, which realigns and stabilizes broken bones in your foot.
  • Reconstructive foot surgery, which can treat foot deformities or traumatic foot injuries

In addition to complex surgeries, we also have a minor procedure room where we perform small procedures like flexor or extensor tenotomies, growth removals, ultrasound-guided injections and more.
