September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, and we are sharing stories about patients who inspire us.

Cody Breshears, 10, is a baseball player from Versailles, Missouri, who was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) in January 2018.

Though the treatment for this aggressive blood cancer has not been easy, Cody has been knocking it out of the park.

“It has been a rough road for Cody,” said his mother, Brittany Brown. “But he’s getting through it, and he has been in high spirits the whole time.”

Cody is currently finishing up the “delayed intensification” phase of his treatment, which consists of chemotherapy, weekly visits to our physical therapy clinic and frequent lab work to monitor his blood counts.

“Our experience at Children’s Hospital has been really wonderful,” Brittany said. “The staff has been so helpful. In the beginning, before we really understood what was going on, everyone was great at explaining everything and making sure we felt comfortable.”

Cody has developed friendships with nurses Margaret Heller, Debbie Huffington, Sara Schroeder and Sarah Buchheit during his visits. He hopes to see them in his cheering section when he returns to the baseball diamond next season.
